Sonny Bono and Cherilyn Sarkisian met in 1962 and started making music together. Their 1965 single "I Got You Babe" became a massive hit, capturing something of the mid-60s mood and launching them into the spotlight. Other songs like "Baby Don't Go" and "The Beat Goes On" kept them on the radio through the rest of the decade.
They were also a television presence, hosting a popular variety show in the 1970s. Their personal relationship, which included marriage and later divorce in 1974, was often part of the public story. They continued to perform together professionally for some time after splitting up.
In 1987, they reunited for a new television show, "The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour," which found an audience again. They released an album called "Heartbreak Express" around that time. Sonny Bono died in a skiing accident in 1998.
