Archive material and source history
Sonny Bono was born in Detroit and moved to Los Angeles in the 1960s. There he met Cherilyn Sarkisian, and together they formed Sonny & Cher. Their early hits like "I Got You Babe" and "The Beat Goes On" made them famous internationally.
After Sonny & Cher split up in 1975, Bono worked on his own music. In 1977 he put out "Laugh At Me," a single that felt personal and connected with listeners. The song became one of his best-known solo recordings.
Later on, Bono went into politics. He served on the Palm Springs City Council starting in 1988 and became mayor there. He died in a skiing accident in 1998.
