Sonny Burgess was born in Newport, Arkansas in 1929. He formed his band The Pacers in 1955 with Jack Nance and Billy Burnette, and they caught the ear of Sun Records founder Sam Phillips. At Sun, Burgess released rockabilly singles like "We Wanna Boogie" and "Red Headed Woman."
His 1957 recording "Restless" became his signature track, with its frantic guitar work and Burgess's distinctive yodel. Other songs from that period include "Ain't Got a Thing" and "Alone with You." The rockabilly sound he helped define was energetic and raw, drawing from the blues and country music he grew up hearing in Arkansas.
Burgess's career faced challenges as musical tastes shifted in the late 1950s. He struggled with substance abuse issues that affected his health and work. In 1960, he was arrested for indecent exposure while intoxicated, an incident that further complicated his professional standing.
