Sophie Makhno

Sophie Makhno grew up in Vitry-sur-Seine, a working-class town outside Paris. Her parents came from Ukrainian and Algerian backgrounds, which gave her an early awareness of different cultures and social tensions. As a teenager, she started writing songs influenced by punk and hip-hop, often with political edges drawn from her own neighborhood.

In 2018, her single 'Chez Les Cons' caught attention for its sharp lyrics about class and privilege in France. The song became a breakout hit, leading to an album of the same name that built her a following. Makhno's writing tends to be direct and sometimes confrontational, which has occasionally put her at odds with authorities over what counts as acceptable expression.
