The SOS Band formed in Atlanta in 1977, with Mary Davis on vocals, Billy Johnson on keyboards, John Alexander on drums, and Bruno Speight on guitar. They were part of that late-70s wave of R&B groups that leaned into a polished, danceable sound, landing on the charts with tracks like 'Take Your Time (Do It Right)' and 'Tell Me If You Still Care.'
Davis left in 1981 to go solo, and the band brought in Chandra Curry as the new lead singer. They kept recording through the early 80s, putting out 'What's Wrong With Our Love Affair' and 'No One's Gonna Love You.' Their music had a clean, synth-driven feel that worked well on radio and in clubs.
Over time, the lineup shifted with other musicians coming in, but the core sound stayed recognizable. They're remembered for those smooth, mid-tempo grooves and straightforward love songs that filled a particular niche in 80s R&B.
