Souad Massi

Souad Massi is an Algerian singer-songwriter who started making music in Algiers. Her father was a musician, and she grew up hearing Algerian folk and Andalusian rhythms alongside Western pop. She sings in Arabic and French, often playing guitar herself. Songs like 'Ghir Enta' and 'Deb' show her way of writing about love and personal reflection with a clear, unhurried voice.

Her first album, 'Raoui', came out in 2001 and helped listeners outside Algeria hear her work. She has recorded several others since, including 'El Mutakallimun' in 2015. Massi has sometimes played with other musicians from North Africa, but her sound stays centered on acoustic guitar and melodies that feel both local and quietly universal.

She performs with a small band that includes oud, percussion, bass, and drums. The music doesn't rush. It leaves room for her lyrics and the subtle details in the arrangements. There's a steadiness to how she approaches a song, whether it's the gentle 'Moudja' or the more direct 'J'ai Pas de Temps'.
