Soul 4 Real was an R&B quartet from Los Angeles that formed in 1991 when Chris Stokes brought together several young musicians. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1992 on Uptown Records and included the single 'Candy Rain,' which became their biggest hit.
The group's sound centered around smooth vocal harmonies, with El DeBarge Jr. handling lead vocals. Other songs like 'Every Little Thing I Do' and 'If You Want It' followed a similar melodic R&B style. They worked with Brian McKnight, who contributed keyboards and vocals before his solo career took off.
Their time together was marked by internal disagreements, particularly around songwriting credits. Marc Nelson, who played bass and wrote much of their material, claimed sole authorship of 'Candy Rain,' leading to legal disputes within the group.
