Soul Asylum came out of Minneapolis in the late 1980s with a raw, introspective take on alternative rock. Their early albums like 'Say What You Will... Clarence... Karl... Bob' from 1988 and 'And the Horse They Rode In On' from 1990 earned some critical notice but didn't break through commercially.
Things changed with their fourth album, 'Grave Dancers Union,' in 1992. The song's lyrics about homelessness connected with a wide audience, and tracks like 'Somebody To Shove' and 'Black Gold' helped define that period for the band.
They kept releasing albums through the 1990s, including 'Let Your Dim Light Shine' in 1995 and 'Candy from a Stranger' in 1998. The lineup has shifted over time, but Dave Pirner has remained the frontman. They still play shows and put out music occasionally, maintaining a connection with the fans who found them during that early-90s moment.
