Background notes

Archive material and source history

Soul Band started in São Paulo in the late 1970s, with founding members like Alexandre Malheiros on bass, Wagner Tiso on keyboards and vocals, Wladimir Gasper on guitars, and Wilson Das Neves on drums. They mixed samba, funk, and soul into a sound that caught on through live shows, even if some purists weren't sure about it at first. Their early albums, such as the self-titled 'Soul Band' from 1979 and 'Tudo de Novo' in 1981, laid down that groove.

In 1983, Malheiros and Tiso left to do solo work, but the band kept going with new members. They put out more records like 'Era Só o Que Faltava' in 1984 and 'Reforma Agrária' in 1996, and songs like 'Tristeza Pé No Chão' and 'Aquela dos Oculos Escuros' stayed in their setlists. Their 1987 album 'Tempo Não Para' included the track 'O tempo não para', which became their biggest hit.

That song, 'O tempo não para', has stuck around as a kind of Brazilian standard, often played at parties and on the radio. It's not flashy or overproduced, just a steady beat that people know. Soul Band's other tune 'Vento' has a similar feel, straightforward and rhythmic, part of what made their music work without needing to shout about it.
