SP Samba formed in São Paulo in 1995 with Carlinhos Brown, Arnaldo Antunes, Marisa Monte, and Dadi Carvalho. Their self-titled debut came out the following year. The group's approach to samba sometimes drew criticism from traditionalists who felt they were straying too far from the genre's roots.
Their song "O Portão" became particularly well-known, touching on themes of cultural diversity. Other tracks like "Amor Intenso" and "Apenas Mais Uma De Amor" show their range within Brazilian popular music. They released five studio albums between 1996 and 2010, including Passo do Tempo and Carioca.
While their lyrics occasionally addressed social issues, the music itself blended samba with elements from jazz and funk. The lineup stayed consistent throughout their active years, with all four members contributing vocals alongside their instrumental work.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
