Space Ghost

Space Ghost started in 1994 as a musical project based on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon character. Mike Watt, Phranc, and Dan Mattern formed the core group, bringing together Watt's bass background from the Minutemen, Phranc's vocals and keyboards, and Mattern's drumming. They released their first album 'Space Ghost Coast to Coast' in 1995, mixing punk, surf rock, and psychedelic sounds.

Over time, the band worked with other musicians including Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth, Beck, and Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo. Their songs like 'A Nugget Of Joy From Zorak' and 'Crazy Lovesick Fool' reflect their eclectic approach. They put out two more albums, 'The Return of Space Ghost' in 1997 and 'Songs of the Damned' in 2003, gradually incorporating electronic and hip-hop elements into their music.

Their lyrics often touched on feelings of alienation and searching for meaning, set against the surreal backdrop of their cartoon inspiration. The rotating lineup and collaborative nature kept their sound shifting, though Watt remained a consistent presence through most of their recordings.
