Sparta formed in El Paso, Texas in 1993, with Jim Ward on vocals and guitar. Their first EP, 'Austere,' came out in 1996, and their debut album 'Wiretap Scars' followed in 1998. That album included 'Collapse,' a song that became one of their most recognizable tracks.
They released 'Porcelain' in 2001, which some listeners found more experimental than their earlier work. The band put out two more albums, 'Threes' in 2006 and 'The Spiral Age' in 2009, before disbanding in 2010. Other songs like 'Cut Your Ribbon' and 'Air' remain part of their catalog.
After Sparta ended, Ward pursued solo work. Some other members went on to play in bands like At the Drive-In and the Mars Volta.
