The Spencer Davis Group formed in Birmingham in 1963 with Spencer Davis on guitar, Steve Winwood on vocals and keyboards, Muff Winwood on bass, and Pete York on drums. Their 1966 single "Gimme Some Lovin'" became a worldwide hit, driven by Winwood's urgent vocal and a relentless rhythm section. Another track from that period, "I'm a Man," showed their knack for turning blues structures into something lean and immediate.
After Steve Winwood left in 1967 to form Traffic, and Muff Winwood departed soon after, the band continued with different lineups. They released albums like "Time Seller" in 1968 and "Gluggo" in 1971, and kept performing live through the early 1970s before disbanding in 1973. Songs like "Keep On Runnin'" and "Somebody Help Me" from their earlier work have held up better on oldies radio than their later material.
