Their self-titled debut album came out the following year. The band's sound mixed rock with folk touches and some jazz influence, heard on tracks like 'Nature's Way' and 'Animal Zoo'.
Their 1970 album 'The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus' included 'Mr. Skin,' which became one of their best-known songs. The lineup shifted over time, with Andes and Locke eventually leaving. California remained the central figure through various configurations of the group.
They kept recording into the early 1970s with albums like 'Feedback' in 1972. The music from that period, including songs such as 'Why Can't I Be Free?' and 'All the Same,' showed their range across different styles without settling into one predictable sound.
