Spitalfield

Spitalfield is an indie folk duo from Brighton with Willow Robinson on vocals and Matthew Swann on guitar. Their music leans toward the atmospheric and introspective, with Robinson's voice carrying lyrics that often feel like they're borrowed from somewhere else. The title track from their 2010 debut album, 'Stolen From Some Great Writer,' hints at that literary quality without making too much of it.

They followed that debut with 'The Ballad of a Man Who Never Got His Medal' in 2013, a concept album about war, and then 'Anchor' in 2016, which turned more toward personal themes. Songs like '...Listen' and '16:49 Army Time' show their range from quiet reflection to something with a bit more structure.

Some listeners have found their literary references a bit heavy, but the band has generally kept to themselves about it. They're one of those groups that seems to work better in the studio than in any kind of spotlight, making records that feel complete on their own terms.
