Background notes

Archive material and source history

Squeeze formed in London in 1974 with Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford writing the songs, Jools Holland on keyboards, Paul Gunn on bass, and Gilson Lavis on drums. Their early singles like 'Take Me I'm Yours' and 'Cool for Cats' got attention in the UK's new wave scene, but it was their fourth album 'East Side Story' in 1981 that really connected. That record had 'Tempted,' a song that became their most recognizable track with its smooth harmonies and Paul Carrack's lead vocal.

They kept making albums through the 1980s, including 'Sweets from a Stranger' and 'Babylon and On,' which had songs like 'Black Coffee In Bed' and 'Up The Junction.' The band broke up in 1990 but came back together in 1998 with a slightly different lineup, touring and putting out records like 'Ridiculous.'
