Ssion is the project of Cody Critcheloe, who started it in Providence, Rhode Island around 2007. Before that, he'd been part of The World/Inferno Friendship Society. The early sound had an electro-pop feel, with songs like 'Luvvbazaar' coming out on a debut album of the same name in 2009.
That track and others dealt openly with queer themes and sexual freedom, which connected with some listeners and drew criticism from others. The music has shifted over time, taking in elements of experimental rock and R&B. Critcheloe has worked with other artists including Perfume Genius and Arca.
