SSP (South Side Posse)

South Side Posse formed in South Central Los Angeles around 1985, working in a space where Christian themes met hip-hop rhythms. Their early single "Deus" found an audience among young listeners who connected with its straightforward approach to faith in music. The group included Teddy Riley, who would later become known for his production work in New Jack Swing, along with Aaron Hall, Kyle West, and Tim Miner.

They released several albums through the late 1980s and early 1990s, including their self-titled 1988 debut and 1990's "All Around the World." Songs like "Amar Sem Ser Amado" and "Sonhos de Rua" carried their message through Portuguese-language titles while maintaining their core sound. Riley departed in 1990, but SSP continued recording, putting out "It's On!" in 1993 and "Soul Control" in 1995.

Their 1993 single "Love on a Two-Way Street" reached the Billboard Hot 100's top 20, marking their most visible commercial moment. The group disbanded sometime in the mid-1990s, leaving behind a catalog that showed one way hip-hop could engage with spiritual themes during that period.
