Stadio formed in Bologna in the late 1970s with Gaetano Curreri, Andrea Fornili, Marco Nanni, and Ricky Portera. They worked through the early years playing shows and rehearsing, eventually releasing their first album in 1981.
Their 1982 single "Chiaro di luna" became a breakout hit, though some listeners raised questions about its similarity to a French song. The band kept recording, and songs like "Sorprendimi" from their 1986 album Canzoni alla radio became staples of Italian pop radio.
Over time the lineup shifted. Marco Nanni left in 1984, replaced by Giovanni Pezzoli. Ricky Portera departed in 2016, with Roberto Drovandi joining on drums. Stadio has continued releasing albums, including Electric in 2022.
