Archive material and source history

Staind formed in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1995 with Aaron Lewis on vocals, Mike Mushok on guitar, Jon Wysocki on bass, and Jonathan Krause on drums. They came together after a previous band called Dredg dissolved. Their early years were spent trying to get noticed in a crowded rock scene.

Their 1999 album 'Dysfunction' broke through commercially, eventually selling over a million copies. Songs like 'Outside' and 'It's Been Awhile' became radio staples, built around Lewis's strained vocal delivery and Mushok's heavy guitar work. The album's themes leaned into personal struggle and raw emotion.

Over the next decade, they released several more albums including 'Break the Cycle' in 2001 and '14 Shades of Grey' in 2003. Their sound maintained that mix of hard rock crunch and introspective lyrics, even as the musical landscape around them shifted. They've kept a fairly steady lineup through most of their recording career.
