Starmania

Starmania began as a concept album from composer Michel Berger and lyricist Luc Plamondon in 1978. It tells a futuristic story about technology's grip on society and what happens to human connection when machines take over. The album wasn't just a collection of songs but a complete narrative with characters and themes that felt ahead of its time.

Some of the songs became standouts on their own, like "Le blues du businessman" and "La complainte de la serveuse automate." These tracks gave voice to the album's central tensions between corporate power, automation, and personal longing. The material was ambitious enough that it raised eyebrows initially, but it found an audience anyway.

Starmania eventually moved from album to stage, with a Paris production in 1979 and a film adaptation in 1981. Berger and Plamondon returned to the world with a sequel album in 1988. The project's durability came from how it wrapped social observation in melodic, theatrical pop that didn't sound quite like anything else at the time.
