Stela Caymmi was born in Salvador, Bahia in 1945, the daughter of composer Dorival Caymmi. She made her professional debut at Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Palace Hotel when she was fifteen. Her self-titled debut album came out in 1960.
Her second album in 1965 included the song "Canção da Noiva," which became widely known. The song's depiction of a young woman in an arranged marriage drew criticism from some quarters at the time, while others saw it as social commentary.
She recorded more than twenty albums over the following decades, working with musicians like João Gilberto and Milton Nascimento. Her father Dorival Caymmi was among her collaborators.
