Sterelab

Stereolab formed in London in 1991 around Tim Gane on guitar, Laetitia Sadier on vocals and guitar, and Andy Ramsay on drums. Their sound pulled from French pop, Brazilian Tropicalia, and the motorik rhythms of Krautrock, but they assembled these pieces into something that felt like its own distinct world. Early albums like 'Peng!' and 'Transient Random Noise Bursts with Announcements' established their mix of lounge, bossa nova, and electronic textures.

By the mid-90s, they were releasing records at a steady clip, with 'Emperor Tomato Ketchup' and 'Dots and Loops' becoming touchstones. Songs like 'Cybele's Reverie' and 'Metronomic Underground' showed how they could wrap hypnotic, repetitive grooves around Sadier's cool, detached vocals and lyrics that often leaned toward the abstract or politically oblique. The band's lineup expanded and shifted over time, with Mary Hansen on vocals and keyboards becoming a key contributor until her death in 2002.

Stereolab never really fit a scene, and their music, dense with ideas but often carried by a simple, driving melody, remained its own category.
