Stereo Kicks formed in 2013 on the British reality show X Factor, with five vocalists: Jake Sims, Casey Johnson, Tom Mann, Chris Leonard, and James Graham. They finished as runners-up but quickly signed with Sony Music. Their debut single 'Love Me So' went to number one on the UK Singles Chart.
In 2014 they released their first album, Light Up the World. The next year brought their second album, Plastic Heart, and James Graham left the band. Their setlists often included covers like 'Fix You' and 'Blank Space' alongside their own material.
