Archive material and source history
Stereo Maracanã formed in the late 1980s with Tito Melgar on lead vocals, Carlos Bermudez on keyboards, Oscar Melgar on drums, and Joe Hernandez on bass. Their name came from the Brazilian football stadium, which caused some early trouble when FIFA objected to its use.
They released their debut album 'Stylo Romance' in 1988, followed by 'Freestyle Love Supreme' the next year. That album's title track 'Freestyle Love' became their most recognizable song, built around danceable rhythms and Melgar's vocals.
Their third album 'No Prisoners' arrived in 1990, and they put out a remix collection in 1991. The band's sound mixed Latin rhythms with the freestyle dance music popular at the time.
