Stereo Mc's

Stereo MC's came out of London's club scene in the late 1980s, with Rob Birch handling vocals and songwriting. Their 1992 single 'Connected' broke through internationally, becoming a dance floor staple that still gets played. The track's steady beat and Birch's conversational delivery made it feel less like a club anthem and more like something you'd hear coming from a friend's car stereo.

They put out albums like '33 45 78' and 'Supernatural,' but never settled into one sound. Their music pulled from hip-hop and funk, then folded in soul and reggae touches. Songs like 'Step It Up' and 'Black Gold' kept the rhythm upfront while letting the arrangements breathe. The group's lineup stayed fairly consistent, with Nick Hallam on keyboards and programming alongside Birch.

Their lyrics sometimes addressed social issues, which set them apart from purely party-focused dance acts. This wasn't a constant theme, but it surfaced enough to give their music a bit of weight beneath the grooves. They kept recording and performing through the 2000s and beyond, releasing albums like 'Emperor's Nightingale' in 2011 and another called 'Connected' in 2014.
