Editor's note

Stereophonics, the Welsh band that kept going

From pub rock beginnings to 'Dakota,' they've been a steady presence in British music for decades.

For their sound, try 'Dakota' or 'Maybe Tomorrow.' The early single 'Local Boy in the Photograph' still holds up.

They started as a local Welsh band playing pubs and clubs, then signed with V2 Records and put out 'Word Gets Around' in 1997. Songs like 'Local Boy in the Photograph' and later 'Dakota' showed they could write rock hits that stuck around. Even after drummer Stuart Cable left in 2003, they kept recording albums like 'Language. Sex. Violence. Other?' and touring.

They formed in 1992 with Kelly Jones on vocals and guitar, Richard Jones on bass, and Stuart Cable on drums. Their debut 'Word Gets Around' did well in the UK, followed by albums like 'Performance and Cocktails' and 'Just Enough Education to Perform.' After Cable's dismissal, they continued through the 2000s with records like 'Pull the Pin.'

Stereophonics formed in Wales in 1992 with Kelly Jones on vocals and guitar, Richard Jones on bass, and Stuart Cable on drums. They started playing local pubs and clubs, eventually signing with V2 Records. Their 1997 debut album 'Word Gets Around' did well in the UK, helped by the single 'Local Boy in the Photograph.'

Over the next decade they put out several albums that found both critical and commercial footing, including 'Performance and Cocktails' in 1999 and 'Just Enough Education to Perform' in 2001. Songs like 'Maybe Tomorrow' showed their quieter side, while 'Dakota' became one of their bigger rock hits.

In 2003, drummer Stuart Cable was dismissed from the band. They kept going after that, continuing to record and tour through the 2000s with albums like 'Language. Sex. Violence. Other?' and 'Pull the Pin.'
