Steve Goodman was born in Chicago in 1948 and started writing songs as a teenager. He spent time in New York's Greenwich Village folk scene before his songwriting gained wider attention.
His song "The City of New Orleans" became his best-known work after Arlo Guthrie recorded it in 1971. Goodman wrote other songs like "Fourteen Days" and "Letter to the Penthouse Forum" that showed his knack for storytelling with a light touch.
Goodman lived with leukemia while continuing to record and perform. He released albums including "Somebody Else's Troubles" and "Affordable Art" before his death in 1984.
