Steve Harley formed Cockney Rebel in 1973 with bassist Paul Jeffreys, guitarist Jean-Paul Crocker, and drummer Stuart Elliott. Their debut album 'The Human Menagerie' came out that same year, featuring the song 'Make Me Smile' that would become their biggest hit.
After disbanding Cockney Rebel in 1978, Harley began working as a solo artist. He released albums like 'The Candidate' and 'Yes You Can' that showed him trying different approaches, moving between rock and other styles. Some of his solo material, including songs like 'Death Trip' and '(I Believe) Love's a Prima Donna,' continued in the vein of his earlier work with its dramatic flair and emotional directness.
Harley's career had quieter periods in the 1980s, but he returned to recording and performing in the early 1990s. His music, particularly the Cockney Rebel material, maintained a following in Britain and Europe where his blend of rock with theatrical elements found its audience.
