Steven Lee Lewis was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1968. He signed with Def Jam Records in the early 1990s and released his debut album 'For the People,' which included the single 'Prayer.' He put out several other albums through the 1990s and early 2000s, like 'The Masterplan' in 1996 and 'Ghetto Man' in 2002.
In 2007, he worked with Wyclef Jean and Fergie on the track 'Holiday.' That song became his most widely recognized release. His music often mixed soul and R&B with hip-hop and pop elements.
Lewis's career included some public difficulties. In 1994, he was arrested for domestic violence against his then-wife, Jermaine Jackson. An earlier car accident in 1988 was also noted in reports about his life.
