Archive material and source history
Stone formed in London in the late 1960s with Ian Gillan on vocals, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Roger Glover on bass, Jon Lord on keyboards, and Ian Paice on drums. They built an early following playing clubs before their self-titled debut album arrived in 1970. That record included 'Child in Time,' a track that helped push them toward wider recognition.
Their 1972 album 'Machine Head' and the 1973 live set 'Made in Japan' followed, cementing their place in rock during that period. Blackmore left the band in 1975, replaced briefly by Tommy Bolin, whose death in 1976 contributed to the group going on hiatus. They reformed in 1983 with Blackmore returning to the lineup.
