Background notes

Archive material and source history

Stone Machine was a funk rock quartet that formed in the late 1960s. Their 1971 album 'Mr. Blues' gave them their biggest success, with the title track becoming their signature song. The band's sound mixed blues, soul, and hard rock into something that felt both gritty and danceable.

The core lineup included Frankie Smith on vocals and harmonica, Johnny Atkins on guitar, Walter Williams on bass, and Bobby Johnson on drums. They released several albums through the 1970s, including 'Funk Machine' in 1973 and a live recording from the Fillmore in 1975. By the end of the decade, internal tensions and changing tastes led to Atkins leaving and the band going on hiatus.

A brief reunion in the 1990s didn't last, but the original recordings, particularly 'Mr. Blues,' have held up for listeners who appreciate that particular blend of blues and funk energy from that era.
