Stone Sour started as a side project for Slipknot's Corey Taylor and James Root back in 1992, with drummer Joel Ekman and bassist Josh Rand. The name came from a drink Ekman used to make. They put out their self-titled debut album in 2002, which had a heavier sound than what came later.
Things shifted after Ekman and Rand left in 2006. Roy Mayorga and Johnny Chow joined, and the band's second album, 'Come What(ever) May,' came out that same year. That record had 'Through Glass,' which got a lot of attention and some debate about its lyrics. It was a more polished, radio-friendly turn for them.
They kept putting out albums through the 2010s, like the two-part 'House of Gold & Bones' project and 'Hydrograd' in 2017. Songs like 'Bother' and 'Song #3' showed their mix of heavy guitar work and melodic hooks. The lineup has stayed fairly steady with Taylor, Root, Mayorga, Chow, and guitarist Christian Martucci.
