Stone Temple Pilots

Stone Temple Pilots formed in San Diego with Scott Weiland on vocals, Dean DeLeo on guitar, Robert DeLeo on bass, and Eric Kretz on drums. Their 1992 debut Core arrived during the grunge era, but their sound had a smoother, more melodic quality than many of their Seattle contemporaries. Songs like 'Sex Type Thing' and 'Vasoline' showed they could write heavy, riff-driven rock, but it was the more polished 'Interstate Love Song' from 1994's Purple that became their biggest hit.

Weiland's vocal style was a defining element, capable of both a gritty snarl and a more plaintive, melodic delivery. His personal struggles with addiction became a public narrative that ran parallel to the band's career, leading to periods of instability. He left in 2003 to focus on solo work and other projects, but returned for a reunion in 2008.

They released albums steadily through the '90s and early 2000s, including Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop and Shangri-La Dee Da. After Weiland's death in 2015, the band continued with different vocalists, releasing the album Perdida in 2020.
