Stoned Hare came out of San Francisco in the 1960s with David Surkamp on vocals and guitar, Mark Downham on bass, and Jim Olds on drums. Their first album was called 'Candles' in 1968, followed by a self-titled record the next year and 'Full Circle' in 1971. The band had some trouble with drug-related incidents, including an arrest at a concert in 1970.
Their music had a psychedelic feel with harmonies that could sound haunting. Songs like 'Candles' and 'Cigarettes And Loneliness' show that side of their work. The self-titled album from 1969 moved toward more experimental territory with longer improvisations.
They didn't stay together very long, but their records still turn up in conversations about that era's San Francisco sound. The arrest and legal issues didn't help, but the music itself, especially the early material, has kept a modest following among people who dig that particular strain of psychedelia.
