The Stoned Ponys formed in Washington, D.C. in 1966 as a trio with brothers Michael and John Stewart on vocals and guitar, plus Danny Hutton on drums and vocals. They signed with Capitol Records the following year and put out a self-titled debut that didn't make much noise. Things changed with their second album, 'Evergreen, Vol. 2,' in 1969. That record had 'Backseat Rhythm,' a single that cracked the Billboard top 10.
Some listeners thought 'Backseat Rhythm' was about drugs, pointing to lines like 'smokin' sweet leaf.' The band said it was more about rebellion and being young. Not long after that peak, the lineup started to shift. Danny Hutton was gone by 1969, replaced by Skip Battin on bass. Michael Stewart left for a solo career in 1971, leaving his brother John as the only original member still in the group.
