Straylight Run formed in the early 2000s with John Nolan on vocals and guitar, Shaun Cooper on guitar, Ryan Hernandez on bass, and Will Noon on keyboards. Their debut album 'Prepare to Be Wrong' came out in 2004 on Island Def Jam, though the label dropped them the following year. They moved to Vagrant Records and released two more albums: a self-titled one in 2006 and 'The Needles the Damage Done' in 2009.
Their songs like 'Hands In The Sky' and 'Existentialism On Prom Night' had a particular sound, keyboard textures, layered guitars, and lyrics that leaned toward the introspective. In 2007, there were some plagiarism claims about 'Hands In The Sky,' which the band denied.
They weren't together all that long, but those three albums found an audience. People who liked that early-2000s alternative rock with a bit of emo inflection kept listening to tracks like 'Mistakes We Knew We Were Making' and 'A Slow Descent.'
