Background notes

Archive material and source history

Stuart K. Hine was born in London in 1910. He grew up hearing his father play the organ, and later found direction after hearing an American evangelist speak. By 1940 he was singing in churches around the UK.

He is best known for his version of 'How Great Thou Art,' a hymn written by Swedish pastor Carl Boberg in 1885. Hine's recording of it became widely familiar. He released albums like 'Songs of Praise' in 1954 and 'How Great Thou Art' in 1959.

Hine sometimes worked with a small choir that included his wife Elsie on soprano, along with Edna Loder, Gordon McLeod, and Percy Colyer. His approach to gospel music occasionally drew criticism for incorporating other styles, but he kept singing the way he felt was right.
