Stuart Townend

Stuart Townend grew up in East Yorkshire, England, in a family where faith was central. He started playing guitar at Christian youth events and singing in the church choir. Early on, he was drawn to the work of artists like Tim Hughes and Graham Kendrick, whose songs dealt with worship and social justice.

He began writing his own material in the early 1990s, releasing his first album, "The Worship of Jesus," in 1994. Albums like "My Heart, Your Home" and "Vertical Worship" followed. His songs, including "The Power Of The Cross" and "In Christ Alone," are known for their straightforward melodies and lyrics that often touch on doubt and faith. They've found a place in churches and gatherings worldwide.

In 2011, some questioned his involvement with Campus Crusade for Christ, an organization with conservative views on social issues. Townend said he had raised concerns about their stance and believed they were working toward being more inclusive. He has continued to write and record, with albums like "There is a Fountain" and "Reflections: The Acoustic Collection" appearing in the 2010s.
