Sublime formed in Long Beach, California in the early 1990s with Bradley Nowell on vocals and guitar, Eric Wilson on bass, and Bud Gaugh on drums. Their sound mixed ska, reggae, punk, and dub in a way that felt loose and immediate, catching on first in local California punk circles.
Their self-titled debut album came out in 1994, but it was 1996's 'Robbin' the Hood' that really broke through. That record included 'Santeria,' a song that became one of their most recognizable tracks alongside 'What I Got' and 'Doin' Time.' The band's lyrics often dealt with street life and personal struggles, delivered with a melodic ease that made even darker themes feel accessible.
Bradley Nowell died of a heroin overdose in 1996, just as the band was reaching wider audiences. Sublime's music continued to find listeners after his death, with songs like 'Badfish' and 'Garden Grove' maintaining a steady presence on alternative radio and in skate parks long after the band stopped recording.
