Subpop

Subpop was a Seattle-based record label founded by Bruce Pavitt and Jonathan Poneman in the mid-1980s. They started it as a fanzine and cassette series before it became a proper label, focusing on underground music from the Pacific Northwest. Their early compilation albums like "Sub Pop 100" and "Sub Pop 200" helped document the local scene.

The label became known for its raw, visceral sound that came to define Seattle's grunge movement. They released early material from bands like Nirvana, whose debut album "Bleach" came out on Subpop in 1989, and Soundgarden's "Louder Than Love" that same year. Pearl Jam's "Ten" followed in 1991. The label's aesthetic was captured in tracks like "Pronto, Fala Alguma Coisa Agora!" which had that gritty, unpolished quality that became their trademark.

Subpop operated with a particular independence that sometimes put them at odds with more mainstream industry expectations. They maintained control over their artistic direction and the bands they worked with, sticking to their vision even when it meant passing on more commercial opportunities. This approach helped establish a distinct identity for the label and the music coming out of Seattle during that period.
