Subrosa

Subrosa formed in Salt Lake City in 2005 around vocalist Rebecca Vernon, with guitarist Matthew Johnson and keyboardist Kim Pack. Their debut album 'The Sunlit Night' came out in 2007, followed by records like 'Noctuary' in 2010 and 'More Constant Than the Gods' in 2013. The band's 2016 album 'For This We Fought the Battle of Ages' included songs like 'Cosey Mo' and 'Borrowed Time, Borrowed Eyes'.

Their music pulls from doom metal and ambient textures, with Vernon's vocals floating over the arrangements. Some listeners have found their approach challenging, but they've kept working in that space without much compromise. You can hear that mix on tracks like 'Aerial' and 'Black Joan' from their catalog.

They haven't released much since the mid-2010s, but the records they made hold up as patient, heavy pieces that don't rush anywhere. The sound is more about atmosphere than hooks, built around those three core members working in Utah.
