Substance D formed in Liverpool in the late 1980s with Martin Newell on vocals, Lee Jones on guitar, David Elias on bass, and Mike Smith on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1991, featuring the single 'Burning Time' that connected with listeners at the time.
Elias and Smith eventually left the band after some lineup changes. They put out several more records in the 1990s, including 'Time to Die' in 1992 and 'The Floor's on Fire' the following year.
Newell's personal difficulties became part of the band's story, and their material often leaned toward darker themes. They kept recording through the mid-90s with albums like 'Impact' and 'Lost' before things quieted down.
