Substar formed in Porto Alegre, Brazil in the late 1990s, with Leandro "Léo" Maca on vocals and guitar. They were an alternative rock band that built a following through live shows and lyrics that felt personal. Their debut album came out in 2001 with the long title "Os Melhores Amigos Serão Os Primeiros A Te Esquecer," which became their biggest release.
That first record included songs like "Não Posso Ser Perfeito" and "Pessoas Especiais? Parte I." The band put out three more studio albums before 2007, with titles like "Menos Que Zero" and "Luz, Câmera, Ação." They also had a live album from Belo Horizonte.
Besides Maca, the group included Alexandre "Guizo" Farinha on bass, Rafael "Rafinha" Reis on drums, and Paulo "Paulinho" Cristaldo on guitar. Substar stopped playing together in 2007, but returned for shows in 2019.
