Substructure

Substructure formed in Los Angeles around the mid-2010s with Anya Kahan on vocals, Ethan Picht on guitar, David Max on bass, and Ryan Scott on drums. They started with a debut album called "Celestial" that leaned into ambient textures.

Their second album, "Interstellar," is where things clicked more widely. The track "Canis Major" from that record became a standout, built around drifting melodies and lyrics that touched on cosmic imagery. Other songs from that period, like "Canis Minor" and "Cassiopeia," followed a similar atmospheric path.

At one point, some listeners read specific spiritual meanings into their lyrics, which sparked a brief, low-level debate. The band didn't really engage with it publicly, and they kept making music. Their catalog stayed focused on that ethereal, space-tinged electronic sound without much dramatic reinvention.
