Suellenn Glaycy

Suellenn Glaycy came up in Salvador, Bahia, where the local rhythms of Axé and Samba were part of the air. She started writing songs about her own experiences early on, though she had to push through some family resistance and financial strain to keep at it. Her 2012 single "Choro Calado," a ballad about unrequited love, broke through in Brazil and caught attention farther out. That song and others like "Só Entra Santo" have a direct, emotional quality that feels personal rather than polished.

She's put out a handful of albums since then, including Vozes in 2014, Oceano in 2018, and Sentidos in 2022. The work has drawn collaborations with figures like Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, which says something about how she's regarded within Brazilian music circles. Her band has included guitarist Daniel Santiago, bassist Leo Brandão, and drummer Ivan Moura.

Glaycy's lyrics sometimes touch on social issues, and she's been vocal about feminism and inequality in interviews.
