Suely Mesquita came up singing in Rio de Janeiro churches and local festivals. In the early 1970s, composer Roberto Menescal heard her and helped produce her first album. That 1975 record included 'Sapatinho de Cristal,' which became a national hit in Brazil.
'Sapatinho de Cristal' wasn't her only song that caught on. Tracks like 'Vira lixo' and 'Aristocracia' also found their way onto Brazilian radio. Her voice had a straightforward, unadorned quality that worked for both ballads and more rhythmic material.
She kept recording through the years, adding songs like 'Bebe Chuva' and 'Canção do Dinossauro' to her catalog. The music stayed simple and direct, never straying far from the melodic sense that made 'Sapatinho de Cristal' work in the first place.
