Suely Xavier

Suely Xavier came up in the early 1980s with the band O Chamado, named after their debut single. That song, 'O Chamado,' gave the group its first real attention when it came out in 1986. She was singing in a way that felt haunted and direct, which caught people in Brazil at the time.

Her music sometimes got her into trouble with authorities. There was an arrest after a performance where she criticized the government, which became a well-known episode. She kept writing about difficult subjects anyway, even as it drew criticism from some quarters.

Later on, she dealt with vocal cord problems that threatened her ability to sing. She worked through it and kept recording. Some of her other songs include 'É Aí Que Jesus Aparece' and 'Milagres de Deus.'
