Suffocation formed in New York City in 1988, originally called Mortuary. The early lineup included Frank Mullen on vocals, Mike Smith and Doug Cerrito on guitars, Josh Barohn on bass, and Mike Erriquez on drums. They built a following through live shows in the underground death metal scene.
Their 1991 debut album 'Effigy of the Forgotten' established their sound with its relentless rhythms and guttural vocals. Songs like 'Liege Of Inveracity' and 'Infecting The Crypts' became early examples of what would be called brutal death metal.
They followed with albums like 'Breeding the Spawn' in 1993 and 'Pierced from Within' in 1995, which included the title track and 'Jesus Wept.' The band has seen numerous lineup changes over time, with Mullen being the only constant member through most of their career. Later albums like 'Abomination Reborn' continued in their established style.
