Sublime formed in Long Beach, California in 1988 with Bradley Nowell on vocals and guitar, Eric Wilson on bass, and Bud Gaugh on drums. Their first album, '40 Oz. to Freedom,' came out in 1992 and found an audience in Southern California's surf and skate scenes.
Their self-titled third album in 1996 included the songs 'What I Got' and 'Santeria,' which got heavy radio play and pushed the band into mainstream recognition. Nowell died of a heroin overdose in May 1996, just as that album was taking off. The band broke up not long after.
